Materials for Engineers

MME1141

This module introduces the student to materials used in engineering applications.

The overall aim is to help the student achieve an understanding of the properties of various classes of materials such as ceramics, metals/alloys, polymers and composites so that the student can select appropriate materials for the engineering application.

The topics to be covered will address the following areas:
Atomic and molecular structures, Crystal structures including defects, Mechanical properties, Mechanical testing, Phase diagrams, Phase transformations, Materials selection using appropriate software such as CES Edupack and Green/sustainable materials.

This course is mainly conducted through lectures and tutorials. In addition, a laboratory experiment and a material selection assignment will enhance the understanding of the students and contribute to the final grade of the module.
