Irene Tan Liang Kheng Scholarship
The Irene Tan Liang Kheng Scholarship was established to support financially disadvantaged but deserving undergraduates enrolled in the Nursing degree programme at the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT).
Each Scholarship is valued at $7,500 and is applicable for the full course of studies of the recipient for up to two Academic Years, subject to criteria.
About the Donor
The Irene Tan Liang Kheng Scholarship for nursing undergraduates at SIT is made possible by a gift from the Estate of Irene Tan Liang Kheng.
Mdm Tan was an investor and philanthropist. She was married to Mr Ong Tiong Tat, who was a close friend of Mr Koh Choon Joo, or CJ Koh. After Mr Koh suffered a stroke in the 1980s, Mr Ong and Mdm Tan were his caregivers. They also hired nurses to look after Mr Koh.
The nurses’ dedication to caring for Mr Koh, and their willingness to make sacrifices for others, touched the Ongs. The Ongs also learnt from them that financial support for nursing students had been scarce. Grateful to nurses, the couple decided to support them. In 2002 Mr Ong made a gift to the Nanyang Polytechnic to set up the CJ Koh Bursary for nursing diploma students.
Now, Mr HH Tan, Mdm Tan’s nephew and the executor of her estate, has carried on Mr Ong and Mdm Tan’s legacy by establishing the Irene Tan Liang Kheng Scholarship for nursing undergraduates at SIT.
Mr Tan hopes to enable more deserving nursing students, who will go on to make a difference in the healthcare sector.
The Estate also supports medical research, medical students and medical professionals.
