Singapore, a global maritime hub, is charting a course towards a greener future and SIT is at the forefront of this transformation, leading the Future Ship & System Design (FSSD) programme, a visionary initiative to develop and deploy electric harbour craft that minimise emissions and maximise efficiency.

Navigating the Future of Sustainable Shipping 

Launched in 2024 by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and the Singapore Maritime Institute (SMI), the FSSD programme aims to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and improve operational efficiency in the maritime sector. SIT was awarded S$20 million by SMI to lead this collaborative effort, working with government agencies, Institutes of Higher Learning (IHLs), and industry partners. 

The FSSD programme centres on three core areas: 

  • CA1: Ship and System Design for Sustainability 
  • CA2: Intelligent Ship and Operations
  • CA3: Charging Infrastructure and Onshore Microgrid

SIT's FSSD Lab 

SIT's Punggol Campus houses the FSSD Lab, a facility dedicated to the programme's research, development, and demonstration of new methodologies. The lab also provides SIT students with valuable real-world learning experiences and showcases the latest maritime advancements. Through workshops, simulations, and practical design exercises, students and industry professionals alike will be prepared to navigate the future of maritime operations.
