Empowering Active Recovery for Stroke Survivors

Project Title: MOTIVATE: Multi-modal Training Programme to Promote Physical Activity After Stroke

Imagine rebuilding your life after a stroke. Everyday activities can become mountains to climb and over 110 million people worldwide have faced such a challenge. SIT is changing this narrative for stroke survivors in Singapore with MOTIVATE, a powerful programme that's not just about exercise; but reclaiming independence and rediscovering the joy of an active life.

Overcoming Roadblocks to Recovery

Although many stroke survivors in Singapore want to be active, the environment is not always designed for them to easily participate. Public gyms can be a maze of inaccessible classes and equipment, and the lack of knowledgeable support adds to the discouragement. This is where MOTIVATE, a dedicated stroke recovery programme, empowers stroke survivors to take charge of their fitness.

What makes MOTIVATE truly special is its collaborative heart – it is a brainchild of multiple organisations, including SIT, Singapore National Stroke Association (SNSA), Singapore General Hospital, National Neuroscience Institute and Republic Polytechnic. MOTIVATE was built with the people who would benefit from it most. Stroke survivors, their caregivers and dedicated healthcare professionals came together to co-design the programme ensuring that it would be effective and practical for real-world implementation.

Initiatives from MOTIVATE

"Sweat, Smile and Repeat" – organised by the SNSA, it introduces stroke survivors to prescribed exercises and gym equipment at two accessible ActiveSG gyms, giving stroke survivors the confidence to engage in physical activities again.

STRIVE – an aphasia-friendly website (as many suffer from aphasia after a stroke), offers resources and expert advice to help stroke survivors stay active and improve their quality of life.

Dedication to Real-World Solutions

But the journey does not end here. The overarching aim is to ensure stroke survivors have access to the same opportunities for physical activity as the able-bodied population. With a hybrid effectiveness-implementation trial already underway, MOTIVATE is more than a programme; it is a commitment to empowering stroke survivors to live their lives to the fullest, regardless of the challenges they face.
