The Master of Engineering programme is designed for professionals to deepen their technical expertise through industrial research and development, while preparing them for leadership positions in the industry.

Students learn from solving real-world problems by working on industry projects, which are jointly supervised by SIT faculty and an industry supervisor. As part of the project, you will complete academic modules to enhance your knowledge and skills. To apply for the programme, students will be required to develop a research project in consultation with the SIT faculty and the industry supervisor. Find out more about the requirements below.

    Step 1: Develop a Research Project Proposal with our Faculty Member

    Explore our faculty directory and identify a faculty member that you would like to collaborate with. Reach out to your selected faculty member together with your project supervisor from your organisation to explore and scope your research project.

    Step 2: Sign Research Collaboration Agreement (RCA)

    Once the research project proposal has been finalised, complete the Research Collaboration Agreement (RCA) between your company and SIT.

    • 2 specialisations and 1 research core modules with a minimum B- grade

    • Master's thesis

    • Non-credit bearing modules

    *Current specialisations offered by SIT are Civil Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Computer Science and Information Systems.

    Coursework Requirements

    To be awarded a MEng, candidates will need to complete all academic modules (equivalent to about 18 credits) and non-credit bearing modules* within a period of two years.

    • A core (research) module with a minimum B- grade by the first year of studies and pass their mid-point progress examination to be held between 12-14 months of their candidature 
    • Two specialisation modules with a minimum B- grade each  
    • All non-credit bearing modules
    • Complete an industry research project and fulfil the requirements of his/her Master thesis
    • All MEng degree programmes are stackable to a Doctor in Engineering (DEng) programme, subject to the candidate meeting the stipulated academic requirements. 

    *Research Integrity must be completed within the first trimester upon enrolment.

    Thesis Submission

    At the end of the programme, candidate will be required to submit a thesis which will be assessed by the Thesis Committee with addition of one or two external examiners who are domain experts in the subject matter of the thesis. A Thesis Defence of the thesis to the Thesis Examination Committee is required.

    Eligibility

    Current employees of companies with recognised Bachelor degree qualifications and a research project identified by the company. Non-company employees may choose to self-finance their study.

        What are the distinctive features of SIT’s Industrial Postgraduate programmes?

        The Industrial Postgraduate programmes are designed to train manpower at the postgraduate level for the industry while allowing the candidate to retain and progress in their career in industry.

        The programmes combine applied research with academic modules, that can be paced out to allow the candidates to complete over the period of their candidature.

        The research project is jointly defined by the sponsoring company and the University, focusing on solving an organisation/industry challenge. The candidates will have both academic and industry supervisors to provide support throughout the programme candidature.

        Candidates are allowed to select specialisation modules across a range of disciplines, thus customising their own knowledge acquisition.

        New Innovation specialisation allows candidates to learn more about innovation mapping techniques, to identify new areas for growth and development, and to develop strategies to take advantage of these opportunities in the context of their research project.

        What are the differences between SIT’s MSc programmes and SIT Industrial Doctorate and Industrial Master programmes?

        The MSc programmes are coursework-based, where candidates are required to complete and pass all mandatory examinable modules.

        The Industrial Master and Industrial Doctorate programmes are research-based programmes. The candidate will pursue independent but supervised research on an approved topic based on which a thesis must be submitted for examination. The candidates are required to complete and pass designated examinable modules. All candidates are required to pass an Thesis Defence for their thesis.

        What is the eligibility for companies to join the Industrial Postgraduate programmes?

        Local or multinational companies based in Singapore that possess the capacity and ability to scope and conduct an industrial postgraduate project with SIT. The Company must be committed to support existing or prospective employees (including providing financial support) towards attaining their Master or Doctorate qualification.

        What are the benefits for the company if they sign up for the programmes?

        Outcomes derived from projects have the potential to translate into new products/services that will benefit the company. By training employees to perform R&D in an industrial context, companies are nurturing future technological leaders for the company. The opportunity to interact with SIT faculty in the research domain will facilitate industry-academia technological exchange.

        Can I pursue the programme if I am self-financed?

        Yes, candidates may choose to self-finance their tuition fees. Candidates will have to find a company sponsor who will develop the research project together with SIT. Company will contribute funding for the research project costs.
