Finance, Law and Standards for Engineers
This module provides a general introduction to legal, financial accounting, ethics and standards that may be encountered by an engineer. Topics covered include:
Professional Ethics
- Code of ethics of professional engineering bodies
- Case studies of engineering disasters and dealing with ethical dilemmas
Operation Standards and Engineering Standards
- Operational standards (e.g. ISO9001, ISO14001)
- Corporate Social Responsibility (SA 8000/ISO 26000) and Occupational Health and Safety (OSHAS 18001)
- Introduction to engineering standards
Legal
- Singapore Legal System
- Law of Contract
- Negligence and liability
- Intellectual property rights
Financial Accounting
- Business structures, Corporate Governance and Regulatory framework
- Financial statements and annual reports
- Balance sheet and income statement
- Fundamentals of cost accounting
In addition to lectures, an e-learning assignment on “Singapore: Imagining the next 50 years” will focus on the interaction between the engineer and the society covering aspects on international relationships, social integration and aspirations based on the Singapore context. Student will watch video lectures and attempt an online assessment after each video.
