Lacing up their running shoes and taking their places at the starting line with joyful smiles, SITizens waited with bated breath for the cue to start their 5-km run at East Coast Park.

Titled The Ireland Funds Global 5K 2023, the run is organised by The Ireland Funds Singapore, in collaboration with the East Coast Park parkrun. Participants could run, walk, cycle, or jog in this inclusive event for a good cause to prevent intergenerational incarceration.

Despite the early start at 8am on a Saturday morning on 23 September 2023, the much-anticipated event saw a remarkable turnout of over 120 participants running against picturesque blue skies. It was a spectacular sight, seeing groups and individuals of different nationalities running together to support a good cause.

Proceeds raised from The Ireland Funs Singapore’s Young Leaders’ flagship event will go to New Life Stories – a non-profit organisation that aims to provide children of incarcerated parents in Singapore with essential reading and social skills to ensure that they are not left behind in their early development years.

Said SIT alumnus Mr Tan Yong Huay (Class of 2019): “I love to run together in a community and for a cause”.

Mr Haziq Akid Bin Mohd Alfie, Year 1 Aerospace Engineering student said he took part in the run because “running with people from diverse backgrounds made it engaging and fun, and it is all for a cause supporting children of incarcerated parents”. “I would love to participate in this kind of events in the future,” he added.
