About Course
This module provides participants with the opportunity to apply advanced engineering principles and project management skills through an independent, self-directed technical project.
These competencies are essential for designing safe, resilient, and compliant electrical systems within increasingly complex building environments. The course focuses on the investigation and development of solutions for real-world installation challenges, emphasizing key areas such as cable sizing, protection device selection and coordination, and strict adherence to SS 638 and functional safety requirements. Working under the guidance of a supervisor, participants will utilise first-principles analysis, engineering judgment, and industry-standard simulation tools to validate their design decisions and perform detailed fault analyses.
Designed to equip graduates and working professionals with the specialised skills needed to manage technical projects from inception to completion, integrating literature reviews, simulation studies, and economic feasibility, all while upholding the high professional and ethical standards required in the power and built environment sectors.
This module, worth 6 European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) credits, is taken concurrently as part of the Graduate Certificate in Electrical Engineering Professional Practices, which comprises three modules. The certificate can also serve as a pathway to the Master of Science in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
Who Should Attend
Prerequisites
- Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering or related field
- A foundational knowledge of electrical network theory and AC power systems is required
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the module, learners will be able to:
- Analyse and define complex electrical installation challenges, specifically in cable sizing and protection coordination, through the application of first-principles and engineering judgment.
- Establish feasible design solutions that balance time and resource constraints while ensuring full compliance with SS 638 and relevant industry standards.
- Conduct targeted technical literature reviews to identify investigative solutions and synthesize key knowledge essential for design execution.
- Manage project lifecycles, including planning, scheduling, and budgeting, while integrating technical skills with safety, economic feasibility, and ethical professional responsibilities.
- Execute detailed technical investigations using industry-standard simulation tools and fault analysis to interpret data and provide validated design conclusions.
- Reflect professionally on project implementation, demonstrating a commitment to continuous improvement in project management skills and a culture of lifelong learning.
- Produce professional technical reports that document electrical design methodologies, simulation results, and protection coordination in alignment with industry standards.

Certificate and Assessment
A Certificate of Attainment will be issued to participants who
- Attend at least 75% of the module; and
- Undertake and pass credit-bearing assessment during the module; and
- Participants will be awarded a Graduate Certificate (GCert) in Electrical Engineering Professional Practice if they complete all three modules (totalling 18 credits) with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.0
- The GCert is stackable towards SIT’s Master of Science in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (MSc EEE), and candidates who attain a CGPA of 2.5 or above may apply for transfer to the MSc EEE programme
Participants who meet the attendance requirement but do not pass the assessment will receive a Certificate of Participation.
