This course provides an in-depth examination of the application of fire safety regulations and codes to various building types and occupancies.

The course focuses on identifying appropriate regulatory frameworks and applying them to ensure compliance with statutory requirements. Emphasis is placed on the interpretation of code provisions, the critical evaluation of compliance strategies, and the practical application of regulatory approaches within complex built environments.

This course is part of the Graduate Certificate in Fire Engineering Practice.

Who Should Attend

Architects, engineers, consultants, and other professionals involved in the architectural design of the building industry
Regulators and practitioners responsible for auditing and inspecting fire safety provisions in buildings
Prerequisites

There are no minimum requirements. However, a relevant educational or technical background is preferred and would be advantageous. Learners are encouraged to consider their readiness to successfully complete the module.

  • Interpret and apply relevant statutory requirements in the conduct of professional practice
  • Apply local fire safety regulations, fire codes, and standards relevant to the specific building type and design topology
  • Evaluate critically the code compliance requirements in the context of complex and innovative architectural or infrastructural projects.
  • Analyse the identified regulatory pathways to demonstrate code compliance through both prescriptive and performance-based approaches for documentation requirements

Certificate and Assessment

A Certificate of Attainment will be issued to participants who

  • Attend at least 75% of the module; and
  • Undertake and pass credit-bearing assessment during the module; and

Participants who meet the attendance requirement but do not pass the assessment will receive a Certificate of Participation.

Participants who successfully obtain all 3 Certificate of Attainment in the Fire Engineering Practice series will receive a Graduate Certificate in Fire Engineering Practice.

Assessment Plan

Assessment Type: Written and project assessment

Learners will undertake a combination of 2 written assignments and 1 project assessment.
