About Course
Singapore’s unique geology and urban development challenges demand a strong understanding of soil and rock behaviour for safe and efficient civil engineering projects. Accurate site investigation and interpretation of test results are critical for designing foundations, slopes, and tunnels that meet stringent safety and performance standards.
This module provides a comprehensive introduction to Singapore’s geological formations, soil and rock characteristics, and their engineering implications.
Key topics include:
- Singapore Geology: Major geological formations and their properties.
- Soil Behaviour: Response to shear and compression; determination of strength and stiffness parameters for different soil types.
- Rock Mechanics: Basic principles and applications to rock slopes and tunnels.
- Site Investigation: Planning boreholes, determining penetration depth, sampling and testing soil and rock, and assessing reliability of field and laboratory results.
This module is part of an updated learning pathway stackable towards a Graduate Certificate in Geotechnical Engineering and SIT’s Master of Science in Civil Engineering.

Certificate and Assessment
A Certificate of Attainment will be issued to participants who:
- Attend at least 75% of each module, and
- Undertake and pass credit-bearing assessment during the module
Participants will be awarded a Graduate Certificate (GCert) in Geotechnical Engineering if they two core modules and one elective module (totalling 18 credits) with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.0.
The GCert is stackable towards SIT’s Master of Science in Civil Engineering (MSc CVE), and candidates who attain a CGPA of 2.5 or above may apply for transfer to the MSc CVE programme.
Participants who meet the attendance requirement but do not pass the assessment will receive a Certificate of Participation.
Fee Structure
The full fee for this course is S$3,606.88.
