Effective from AY2025/26 Trimester 2 (January 2026), the Postgraduate Certificate in Civil Engineering will be transiting to Graduate Certificate in Civil Engineering. For more details, please refer to the full notice here.

Learners will learn advanced design knowledge and skills in designing flat slab and irregular slab systems, slender columns, and non-flexural members such as deep beams, corbels, dapped beams and beams with openings.

This module will also provide learners with the latest knowledge and recent development in prestressed concrete structures. Topics covered in Prestressed concrete design will include the design of post-tensioned beams and one-way slabs, as well as the constructions techniques used for these elements.

Who Should Attend

  • Civil Engineers, Site Engineers, Field Engineers, Project Engineers
  • Construction Managers
Prerequisites
  • Candidates should possess a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering

What You Will Learn

Strut and Tie

  • Learn to analyse strut and tie structures
  • Implement the methods taught to design several typical members

Design of Flat Slabs

  • Use hand calculations and FEA analysis to analyse complex two-way spanning flat slab systems
  • Design the elements using the results of the analyses

Slender and Complex Shape Columns

  • Understand the principles of second order analyses will be applied to the design of slender concrete columns
  • Derive interaction diagrams from first principles for columns of complex shapes

Design of Prestressed Concrete Members

  • Analyse and design post-tensioned members and pre-tensioned members, including long span beams and one-way slabs
  • Review and discuss construction and fabrication methods
