About Course
Foundations are the backbone of any structure. Poor design can lead to catastrophic failure or excessive settlement, compromising safety and performance. Understanding how to design shallow and deep foundations is essential for engineers working on complex projects.
This module provides an in-depth exploration of foundation design principles and construction techniques to minimize risks and ensure structural integrity.
Key topics include:
- Shallow Foundations: Individual footing, combined footing, strip footing, raft, and piled-raft systems.
- Deep Foundations: Driven piles, press-in piles, bored piles, barrette piles, and caissons.
- Testing and Analysis: Extensive coverage of static and dynamic pile testing, including interpretation of test results.
This module is part of an updated learning pathway stackable towards a Graduate Certificate in Geotechnical Engineering and SIT’s Master of Science in Civil Engineering.
Who Should Attend
- Civil Engineers
- Site Engineers
- Field Engineers
- Project Engineers
- Construction Managers
Prerequisites
- Candidates should possess a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering
Learning Outcomes
Design of Shallow Foundations
- The design of footings and rafts will be covered, including settlements and stability consideration
Piled Foundation
- The course will encompass the design of single piles and pile groups, considering both vertical and lateral capacities
- Negative skin friction effects will be included
- Finally, pile testing methods will be explained

Certificate and Assessment
A Certificate of Attainment will be issued to participants who:
- Attend at least 75% of each module, and
- Undertake and pass credit-bearing assessment during the module
Participants will be awarded a Graduate Certificate (GCert) in Geotechnical Engineering if they two core modules and one elective module (totalling 18 credits) with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.0.
The GCert is stackable towards SIT’s Master of Science in Civil Engineering (MSc CVE), and candidates who attain a CGPA of 2.5 or above may apply for transfer to the MSc CVE programme.
Participants who meet the attendance requirement but do not pass the assessment will receive a Certificate of Participation.
