The team proposes to develop new cartogram software that is suitable for interactive use on mobile devices.

Cartograms are geographic maps in which areas (e.g. countries or provinces) are rescaled in proportion to a thematic mapping variable (e.g. population size or gross domestic product).

At present, there is a dearth of user-friendly, robust and actively maintained software that can generate cartograms.

The team envisions that such software will be used by educators and national statistics agencies to communicate geospatial data with intuitive and engaging visualisations.
