About Course
Modern buildings demand innovative fire safety solutions that go beyond prescriptive codes. With Singapore’s Performance-Based Fire Engineering Regime gaining prominence, professionals need the expertise to design safe, compliant, and future-ready structures.
This course equips learners to meet these challenges while aligning with Industry 4.0 principles of digitalization and smart safety design.
You’ll gain a deep understanding of performance-based fire safety engineering, human behavior in emergencies, and structured workflows under Singapore’s regulatory framework. Learn to apply digital simulation tools like Pathfinder to model occupant movement and egress, interpret behavioral data, and design effective evacuation strategies. The course also covers key deliverables such as the Fire Engineering Design Brief (FEDB), Fire Safety Engineering Report (FSER), and compliance with Fire Engineering Guidelines.
This course is part of the Graduate Certificate in Fire Engineering Practice, and is developed in collaboration with the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) to raise professionalism in fire safety engineering within the built environment.
Who Should Attend
This course is designed for professionals and practitioners involved in fire safety and building design, including:
- Fire Safety Engineers and Fire Modellers - Specialists working on performance-based fire safety design and simulation
- Consultants and Design Practitioners - Professionals engaged in compliance and innovative fire safety solutions
- Safety Officers and Facility Managers - Those responsible for evacuation planning and life-safety systems in buildings
- Civil Defence and Regulatory Personnel - Individuals reviewing fire-engineering submissions and ensuring regulatory compliance
- Academic and Industry Researchers - Professionals applying evacuation modelling in research or project design
Applicable Sectors:
Primarily for the built environment and fire-safety sector, including commercial, industrial, and infrastructure developments where occupant safety and evacuation strategy are critical.
Prerequisites
There are no minimum requirements. However, a relevant educational or technical background is preferred and would be advantageous. Learners are encouraged to consider their readiness to successfully complete the module.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Analyze human behavior in fire emergencies and apply behavioral data to evacuation modeling.
- Use Pathfinder to simulate egress scenarios, interpret results, and evaluate design options for life safety.
- Understand Singapore’s Performance-Based Fire Engineering Regime, including roles, approval workflows, and key documentation.
- Apply Fire Engineering Guidelines to develop compliant, performance-based solutions for projects.
