About Course

Understanding fire dynamics is essential for creating safer buildings and communities. This course explores how fires ignite, grow, spread, and can be effectively controlled — knowledge that is vital for designing and implementing robust fire safety strategies.

In 2022 alone, an estimated 3.7 million fires worldwide resulted in 19,600 deaths (*CTIF, 2024). Fires can occur in a wide range of environments—from residential and commercial buildings to wildland and vegetation areas—underscoring the urgent need for comprehensive fire safety measures.

This course is designed for professionals in both industry and government sectors who are involved in fire safety, emergency planning, or building design. It provides a strong foundation in fire behaviour, equipping learners with the skills to enhance safety, resilience, and risk management in the built environment.

This course is part of the Graduate Certificate in Fire Dynamics and Fire Modelling.

Who Should Attend

Fire safety professionals
Junior and middle management individuals involved in fire safety engineering
Prerequisites

There are no minimum requirements. However, a relevant educational or technical background is preferred and would be advantageous. Learners are encouraged to consider their readiness to successfully complete the module.

Learning Outcomes

Workshop 1: Fire Dynamics Part 1

  • Explore fire ignition, propagation and behaviour, as well as burning of gases, liquids and solids, including through relevant case studies
  • Apply fundamental concepts in fire dynamics to real-life examples.

Workshop 2: Fire Dynamics Part 2

  • Understand compartment fires, fire scenarios, combustion toxicity, and human behaviour in fire.
  • Learn how fire research is carried out through a visit to the SCDF Fire Research Centre and observe fire growth at the Compartment Fire Behaviour Training (CFBT) Complex, with a take-home assignment to reinforce learning.
