Personalised and objective feedback for group discussion and participation

Grant Name

Abstract

This proposal aims to develop a proof-of-concept (POC) AI system that captures and analyses communication in online group discussions. It provides students with personalized, immediate, objective, detailed and clear feedback on their demonstrated oral communication skills in discussions. With just-in-time feedback via a dashboard, students will be able to have personalized, private, and confidential visual insights on the quality of their engagement in group discussions in terms of clarity, confidence and coherence. Students can also key in their reflections on the feedback and rate the feedback given to encourage spaced and deeper learning. The POC focuses on online discussions via Zoom or Teams, where each student is required to be on their own device. This provides technical simplicity to differentiating the voices of each speaker in the online discussion, with the view of a future system that would be able to provide similar feedback in (physical and online) classroom settings to students and facilitators. The POC will focus on text-based metrics in this phase of the project, though audio and video-based metrics may be possible in future systems.
