About the Assessment

Artificial Intelligence is becoming part of everyday work across many industries. This assessment helps individuals understand their current level of AI capability and identify practical next steps for learning and skills development.

Under the National AI Impact Programme, the Ministry of Digital Development and Information (MDDI) and the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) introduced three AI user archetypes: AI Aware, AI Literate, and AI Fluent to describe progressive levels of AI understanding in the workforce.

Drawing on this national reference and synthesising capability expectations from the relevant SkillsFuture Skills Framework for Infocomm Technology, this assessment translates these archetypes into four practical capability dimensions to help learners better understand their current strengths and learning opportunities.

Assessment Process and Results
Why am I asked to indicate my AI capability level before starting the assessment?

Before beginning the AI Diagnostic Tool, you will be asked to indicate your current AI capability level, ranging from AI Not Yet Aware to AI Fluent, based on your own self-assessment. This provides context for interpreting your assessment results and comparing your self-perceived capability with your assessed capability.

How are AI capability levels determined?

Your AI capability level is determined based on your responses to the assessment questions. Your responses are analysed to identify the AI capability profile that best matches your knowledge, understanding, and application of AI, and to place you within one of the defined AI user archetypes.

Who developed the AI user archetypes used in the assessment?

The AI user archetypes used in the AI Diagnostic Tool were developed by the Ministry of Digital Development and Information (MDDI) and the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) as part of the National AI Impact Programme. The archetypes help individuals better understand their level of AI capability and support the responsible adoption of AI in the workplace.

What does "AI Not Yet Aware" mean?

AI Not Yet Aware refers to individuals who are in the early stages of AI capability and may have little or no familiarity with AI concepts, tools, or applications in everyday or workplace settings. This level suggests that developing a foundational understanding of AI would be beneficial before progressing to more advanced knowledge and skills.

What does "AI Aware" mean?

AI Aware refers to individuals who have a basic understanding of AI concepts and are familiar with how AI is used in everyday life and workplace settings. Individuals at this level recognise common AI applications and have begun exploring how AI can support their work or personal activities.

What does "AI Literate" mean?

AI Literate refers to individuals who can use AI tools effectively to improve productivity and support their work or personal activities. For example, they may be able to write effective prompts to generate useful outputs, such as summarising meeting notes or drafting content using ChatGPT.

What does "AI Fluent" mean?

AI Fluent refers to individuals who can work with AI or technology teams to integrate AI solutions into workflows, improve work processes, and support AI-enabled transformation initiatives. For example, they may use low-code AI tools to automate role-specific tasks or contribute to the implementation of AI solutions within their organisation.

How should I interpret my AI capability results?

Your AI capability results provide a starting point for understanding your current level of AI capability. They are intended as a developmental guide rather than a comprehensive evaluation of your capabilities. When interpreting your results, you should also consider your work context, industry requirements, and practical experience using AI.

Why is feedback only provided for selected open-ended questions and not all questions?

Feedback is provided only for selected open-ended questions where it can meaningfully support learning and reflection. Some questions are designed primarily to assess your level of AI capability and do not lend themselves to constructive individual feedback. The assessment therefore focuses on providing feedback where it can offer the greatest value in helping you understand and improve your AI capabilities.

Completing the Assessment
What should I do if I am unsure how to answer a question?

If you are unsure how to answer a question, you may select I am not sure and proceed to the next question.

Can I skip questions in the AI Diagnostic Tool?

Yes. Participation is voluntary, and you may skip questions without preventing completion of the assessment.

Will I still receive results and course recommendations if I skip a question?

Yes. You will still receive your AI capability profile and course recommendations even if you are unsure about a question or choose to skip it.

Can the AI Diagnostic Tool be completed more than once on the same device?

As a general rule, each device can complete the AI Diagnostic Tool only once under normal browser settings.

Can I access the AI Diagnostic Tool outside Singapore?

Access to the AI Diagnostic Tool outside Singapore may depend on system accessibility and other technical considerations. If access issues persist, please contact skills.assessment@singaporetech.edu.sg for assistance.

Is the AI Diagnostic Tool intended to be used as a pre- and post-training assessment?

No. The AI Diagnostic Tool is designed to help individuals assess their AI knowledge and skills in general and workplace contexts. It is not intended to be used as a pre- and post-training assessment.

Feedback and Data Use
How will the information collected at the end of the assessment be used?

The individual’s information collected at the end of the assessment will be used to generate the individual’s AI capability profile and provide relevant course recommendations. It may also be used in aggregate to support service improvement, programme administration, and analysis of overall take-up and user needs, where applicable.

Can additional questions be added to the AI Diagnostic Tool to provide a more comprehensive evaluation of AI capability?

Suggestions for additional questions are welcome and may be considered in future enhancements. However, adding more questions would increase the assessment's length. The AI Diagnostic Tool is intentionally designed to be concise, allowing it to be completed within a reasonable time while still providing meaningful insights into AI capability.

How should feedback on the AI Diagnostic Tool be submitted?

Behind the Assessment

How the assessment was designed and validated.

The AI capability assessment tool was developed as a light-touch, time-efficient screening instrument to support Singapore's national AI upskilling efforts. Its primary purpose is not certification, but rapid sense-making: to help individuals understand their current level of AI capability and to guide them towards appropriate, differentiated training pathways.

The design was informed by close consultation with the Skills and Workforce Development Agency (SWDA) and anchored in relevant Skills Framework references, ensuring coherence with national workforce development priorities. The tool is designed to minimise time burden, and even short-answer responses are expected to be concise. It should be accessible to the general public, and yet still yield meaningful distinctions in capability that could inform course recommendations.

To achieve this balance, the assessment was intentionally designed around everyday and work-relevant scenarios, rather than technical knowledge tests. This approach reflects a core design principle: for broad-based AI upskilling, what matters first is how people understand, use, and judge AI in context, not whether they can describe algorithms or architectures. The tool also underwent multiple iterations, including validation with individuals at different levels of AI proficiency. Feedback from these pilots was used to refine scenario framing, calibrate difficulty, and improve the clarity and discrimination of assessment items.

We welcome feedback from users and partners as the assessment continues to evolve. As AI becomes increasingly embedded in everyday work and life, improving how people understand and use AI responsibly will remain an ongoing effort.
