Virtual gas turbine engine education package with interactive capability

Grant Name
SIT Advancement for Learning and Teaching (SALT)

Abstract

The objective of the project is to produce an interactive education software consisting of lectures, tutorials, simulated results, video, animations and quizzes to help students understand gas turbine operations starting from basic laws of thermodynamics. The software will also be used as a material for "flipped classroom" teaching methodology so that students can acquire basic knowledge before class, and more in-depth discussions can be stimulated during class.

The interactive software can also allow students to experiment with parameters (such as pressure, flowrate, rpm, temperature etc.) to understand their effects on gas turbine engine. The developed virtual gas turbine could act as ‘backup’ equipment when the lab is down. The results from virtual machines are based on actual data collected from a real SR 30 engine in the SIE lab, and could be used in place of actual lab classes when necessary.
