Pedagogical innovation for statistics across SIT programs

Grant Name
SIT Advancement for Learning and Teaching (SALT)

Abstract

The project is to pilot the use of Productive Failure as an innovative pedagogy to enhance teaching and learning of statistics in SIT. Productive Failure is an approach where students engage in generating solutions to novel problems before they are taught the associated concepts.

The rationale is that while students typically fail to solve problems, their sub-optimal solutions are actually productive resources that prepare them to learn better from subsequent instruction. This is achieved by priming students to be ready to connect the new knowledge with their prior knowledge, and to recognise the key points in the new knowledge.
