Enhanced active learning in labs through peer leaders and home-based learning

Grant Name
SIT Advancement for Learning and Teaching (SALT)

Abstract

It is important to understand that the Year 1 modules for most Engineering Programmes serve as a fundamental learning for students who come from both Engineering and Non-Engineering backgrounds. Many of these Year 1 modules consist of practical lab sessions, which serve as the basic building blocks for more advanced modules in their Year 2 and Year 3 curriculum.

This project proposes to expose the senior student helpers as peer leaders in engaging the Year 1 students in active learning during practical lab sessions, as well as to develop online video demonstrations prior to lab sessions (flipped classroom). The project further extends practical labs that are school-based to homebased learning through the loan of small portable electronic equipment. With this series of activities, we hope to make learning more interesting for students not only in campus, but also to enable them to learn independently at home.
