Biography
Eugene is a Registered Nurse with more than two decades of nursing experience. He commenced his career in oncology nursing and has worked at Mount Elizabeth Hospital (MEH) and Changi General Hospital (CGH). With a passion for developing competency and building capability for a future-ready workforce, he pursued his passion for education. He oversaw pre-professional and continuing education and eventually headed Tan Tock Seng Hospital's (TTSH) nursing education and development department. He has developed and taught oncology, palliative care and geriatric nursing programmes for trained nurses. He also oversaw the transition to practice programme for novice nurses. Additionally, he has experience collaborating with higher learning institutes to manage nursing students during their clinical practicums. Currently, he continues to support life support training for nurses as a Chief Instructor and Auditor in both basic cardiac life support and life support courses for nurses.
He was awarded the Singhealth-Lee Foundation DS Lee Excellence in Nursing Award (2009) for his passion for nursing, the National Healthcare Group Outstanding Nurse Teacher Award (2014) and the National Healthcare Group Education Leaders Award (2021). He was given an opportunity by the Ministry of Health, Singapore, to pursue a clinical attachment at the renowned Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, Melbourne, Australia as a fellow of the Health Manpower Development Plan (HMDP) in 2015 and was awarded the Ministry of Health Nursing Development Scholarship (MNDS) to read his PhD in Nursing at the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2012, focussing on novice nurses' transition to practice journeys.
Besides working experiences in healthcare institutions, Eugene also has academic experience at the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS), where he oversaw the development of continuing and professional education programmes to upskill lifelong learners. He has an adjunct lecturer position with Nanyang Technological University (NTU), where he coordinates and teaches a Master in Applied Gerontology module. As an adjunct adult educator, Eugene actively teaches in the Advanced Certificate in Learning and Performance programme (ACLP, previously known as ACTA) at the Institute of Adult Learning (IAL), which equips aspiring adult educators with the competencies of a learning facilitator, assessor, and budding learning solutionist. Eugene also has experience as an academic dean at Ngee Ann Academy (NAA), subsidiary of Ngee Ann Kongsi, a local private education institution. As an academic dean, he led the educational delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes from prominent university partners. He also led in a range of critical academic and administrative responsibilities to lead and take charge of developing new academic partnerships, programme planning, validation, and review.
Eugene’s research interests focuses on novice nurses' transition to practice journeys and training effectiveness. He is also keen on the implementation science and nurse-led evidence-based practice projects surrounding geriatric, oncology, and palliative care nursing.
As a firm believer in lifelong learning, Eugene collaborates with various healthcare and adult learning institutions to design and facilitate learning experiences to create measurable and positive change for individuals and companies.
