Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA) is a powerful analytical tool that builds on well-known process hazard analysis techniques to evaluate the risk of a hazard scenario. The risk is them compared with the organisation's risk tolerance criteria to help it decide if existing or proposed safeguards are adequate, or if additional safeguards are needed.

In this practical 2-day workshop, you will learn about the fundamentals of LOPA, its advantages and limitations, and how you can leverage it to make decisions about layers of protection used in a hazard scenario.

By the end of the workshop, you will be able to:

  • Define an independent protection layer (IPL)
  • Differentiate between safeguards and independent protection layers (IPL)
  • Decide if a process needs a safety instrumented system (SIS)
  • Assign a safety integrity level (SIL) to SIS
  • Understand the safety lifecycle of SIS

Who Should Attend

  • Managers, engineers, operators, safety advisors and risk management practitioners

What You Will Learn

  • Anatomy of an incident
  • Difference between safeguards and independent protection layers (IPL)
  • What is a "safety instrumented system (SIS)", a "safety instrumented function (SIF)", a "safety integrity level (SIL)" and a "basic process control system (BPCS)"?
  • LOPA/SIL assessment: LOPA steps
  • Initiating events: Types and likelihood
  • Frequency modifiers
  • Estimating consequences
  • Type of IPLs
  • Active BPCS and alarms
  • SIS and pressure relief devices
  • Passive fire and gas deluge systems
  • Basic IPL rules
  • IPL integrity
  • Determining scenario frequency
  • Pros and cons of LOPA; typical team members
  • SIL study and reporting
  • Safety lifecycle of SIS
  • Overview of safety standards: IEC 61511/61508, ISA TR84.00.02-2002
