The Mapletree Challenge

In the age of globalization, entrepreneurship relies heavily on people being able to communicate effectively. Without the right communication skills, entrepreneurs would not be able to sell their ideas and graduates would not be able to position themselves as must-have talents.

Mapletree Investments is searching for students with the creative and entrepreneurial drive to generate innovations to enhance sustainability. Sustainability is understood in broad terms as relating not only to the sustainable use of physical resources but also to the rationalization of economic and social practices to ensure the continued well-being of all those affected by them, i.e. stakeholders. The Mapletree Challenge aims to inspire students to make a difference in today's world through sustainable innovations and to equip them with the skills to convey their ideas persuasively.

The Grand Final

The Grand Final of The Mapletree Challenge will feature six competing student project teams sharing their ideas for sustainable innovations in a 10 to 15-minute live presentation to a panel of distinguished judges.

  • Present your entrepreneurial ideas on an issue of sustainability to a panel of experts
  • Watch teams of peers try to wow the judging panel with their own ideas
  • Walk away with The Mapletree Gold, The Mapletree Silver, or Mapletree Bronze, thousands of dollars in cash prizes and possibly an opportunity to have your idea supported for prototyping.

Mr. Wan is responsible for all of legal, compliance, corporate secretarial, human resource as well as corporate communications and administration matters across all business units and countries at Mapletree. He is also the Joint Company Secretary of MIPL and the four Mapletree REIT Managers. 

Prior to joining Mapletree as General Counsel in 2009, Mr. Wan was Group General Counsel – Asia at Infineon Technologies for seven years, where he was a key member of its Asia-Pacific management team. He started his career as a litigation lawyer with one of the oldest law firms in Singapore, Wee Swee Teow & Co., and was subsequently with the Corporate & Commercial/Private Equity practice group of Baker & McKenzie in Singapore and Sydney.

Ms. Heng Sue Yuan
Vice President, Corporate Communications
Mapletree Investments

With over 22 years of communications and marketing experience, Sue Yuan leads Mapletree Investments’ Corporate Communications, in the Group’s communications, branding, public relations and corporate social responsibility initiatives. Understanding the fundamentals of business, she was one of the panel of judges for the Inaugural River Hongbao Hackathon 2019, an entrepreneurship competition which was also supported by Mapletree. 

Professor Ng Siu Choon
Associate Provost (Students)
Singapore Institute of Technology

Prior to joining SIT, Professor Ng has over 28 years of experience in academia at both the National University of Singapore, NUS (1989-2005) and Nanyang Technological University, NTU (2005-2015), where he held several academic leadership positions. He served as Deputy Head (Teaching & Research) at the Department of Chemistry, NUS from July 1999 to December 2004.

Dr. Reto Callegari
Entrepreneur-in-Residence
Singapore Institute of Technology

Dr. Reto Callegari is currently an Entrepreneur-in-Residence at SIT. He was an Entrepreneur-in-Residence and Adjunct Professor at INSEAD from 2005-2012. Prior to setting up an investment company in Singapore and acting as an Angel Investor, he held various senior positions in banking, among them CEO Private Banking Asia-Pacific at Credit Suisse.
Professor Yaacob Ibrahim
Advisor, Office of the President
Singapore Institute of Technology

Professor Yaacob Ibrahim joined the SIT Board on 1 Jan 2019. He is currently Professor of Engineering at the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) where he is also Advisor to the President of SIT. Prior to his current position, Professor Yaacob served as Minister in the Ministries of Communications and Information (2011 – 2018), Environment and Water Resources (2004 – 2011) and Community Development and Sports (2002 – 2004). Throughout the 16 years as Minister, he was also Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs. He started his political career as a Member of Parliament (MP) in Jalan Besar GRC on 2 January 1997. He held several political appointments before becoming a minister in 2002.
The Semi Final

The Innovation Presentation allows twelve teams to present their respective ideas on entrepreneurship and innovation to a panel of judges. The twelve teams will  

  • Share their entrepreneurial ideas on an issue of sustainability with experts and receive feedback
  • Deliver a team-based persuasive pitch that sells their innovation
  • Receive useful tips from leaders of industry and the university
  • Put themselves and their project teammates in a position to win thousands of dollars in cash prizes.
  • Move to six teams! These six will move forward toward the Mapletree Challenge Grand Finals to be held at Mapletree Business City on 2 May.

Innovation Presentation Masterclass I: Selection & Coaching

In this session, the ten semi-finalist project teams chosen by the Committee will join together and give 5-to-10 minute pitches of their projects. The top six teams will be chosen by a panel of judges.

Singapore Institute of Technology

At TIE, Arthur oversees applied research administration, entrepreneurship and intellectual property management. Prior to joining SIT, Arthur was a practising lawyer with local law firms Khattar Wong & Partners and Drew & Napier. He has represented clients in company law disputes and corporate restructuring.

Dr. Foo Yong Lim
Associate Prof & Assistant Provost of Applied Learning
Singapore Institute of Technology

Dr. Foo Yong Lim is the Assistant Provost (Applied Learning) at the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT). He is also an Engineering faculty member who specializes in materials engineering and materials analysis.
 

Mr. Jerry Chen
Managing Director, Express Melody

Mr. Jerry Chen is the Managing Director of Express Melody. He is active in inspiring youth entrepreneurs who choose to embark on the amazing journey of entrepreneurship. His own company has gotten investment to grow in Southeast Asia and has also been acquired by the leading international background music company. Jerry continues his post-acquisition journey to lead the company to the next level beyond soundscape.
Mr. Zach Wilson
Managing Director, AlfaTech & DVUCA

Zach Wilson is the Managing Director of AlfaTech and DVUCA in Singapore. He has over 15 years of experience in engineering, construction and real estate development. Mr. Wilson specializes in clean technology, renewable energy, energy efficiency and hi-tech projects. He is a LEED Accredited Professional, a member of CoreNet Global and the Urban Land Institute (ULI). Mr. Wilson has an M.S. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Stanford University and a B.S. in Construction Engineering Technology from Montana State University.

Mohamed Abbas is the Co-founder of Rely, a Singapore-based financial technology company. He was named in the Forbes 30 under 30 Asia list within the finance and venture capital category as one of the brightest young entrepreneurs in Asia. He was also listed by Fintech Singapore as one of the 21 remarkable Fintech founders under 35 years across Southeast Asia.

 

Ms. Saleemah Ismail
Private Sector Partnerships Development, UN Women

Saleemah Ismail is an international development professional, social entrepreneur and gender equality and diversity advocate. She started her career in the private sector before moving on to provide advisory and consultation to two agencies: United Nations Women and United Nations Development Programme. Saleemah also co-founded Aidha, a business school for migrants and low-income communities. The school now has a direct impact on migrant women and their families in over ten Asian countries. 
Mr. Uantchern Loh
CEO for Asia Pacific, Black Sun

Uantchern is currently the CEO, Asia Pacific for Black Sun, a stakeholder communications company.  Uantchern serves on committees at the Singapore Institute of Technology, the Institute of Technical Education and the Singapore University of Social Sciences.  He is an adjunct professor with the SUSS.  He volunteers on the Boards of 3 charities - Securities Investors Association (Singapore), Kidney Dialysis Foundation and Shared Services for Charities. Uantchern has a Masters in Hospitality Administration, summa cum laude from the University of Nevada Las Vegas.
Mr. Zach Wilson

Professor Tan Thiam Soon
President, Singapore Institute of Technology

Professor Tan Thiam Soon is the President of the Singapore Institute of Technology. He obtained his B. Eng in Civil Engineering from University of Canterbury and subsequently obtained his MS and PhD from California Institute of Technology. Prior to joining SIT, he was with National University of Singapore for more than 26 years and was a Professor of Civil Engineering.

Mr. Shamir Rahim
Founder and CEO, VersaFleet Pte Ltd

Mr Shamir Rahim is the Founder & CEO of VersaFleet. He also serves as President of the Singapore Malay Chamber of Commerce & Industry, and several national councils. He graduated in molecular biology as a University Scholar and holds a Master of Science from the National University of Singapore. He was on the NUS Overseas College program at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

Mr. Eugene Wong
Venture Capitalist, Sirius Ventures

Eugene Wong is the Founder and Managing Director of Sirius Venture Capital (SVC), a venture capital company. Eugene is also Chairman of CrimsonLogic and Global eTrade Services (GeTs) and Vice-Chairman of Japan Foods Holding. He is a board member of AVA and Enterprise Singapore. He is also a Chartered Director (CDir) and Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA).

Ms. Nancy Ling
Co-Founder, EcoU

Director and Co-Founder of ECO U PTE LTD, Nancy Ling is passionate about all things sustainability, and in five years has been instrumental in building a company that is at the forefront of changing the landscape of Singapore’s addiction to plastic.  Prior to devoting herself to ECO U, Nancy worked in both the public and private sectors serving in organisations including the National University of Singapore and Hyundai Motor Company.

Format & Prizes

Format

The Mapletree Challenge has three components. The first is two rounds of Job Interview & Presentation Masterclasses. These advanced-level workshops, conducted by leading corporate trainers, will cover topics that include interview and self-presentation skills as well as personal branding on traditional and digital platforms. To help students gain a more competitive edge, trainers will also assist them in better understanding industry perspectives, with individual feedback and coaching provided. Students who effectively pitch themselves via short vodcasts will receive cash prizes and vouchers.

The second component of the Challenge will be the Mapletree Innovation & Entrepreneurship Forum and Masterclasses. The Forum will be held on 20th March, 2019, and will center on the sharing of ideas about entrepreneurship by a panel of top industry leaders. The follow-up Masterclasses will allow budding entrepreneurs to pitch their project ideas for sustainable innovations to experts and gain insights into making effective innovation proposals.

The last component is The Mapletree Challenge Grand Final. Taking place on 2nd May, 2019, The Grand Final will feature six competing student teams from the Innovation & Entrepreneurship Masterclasses who have produced the most impactful pitches of their sustainable innovations. Each team will share its ideas in a 15 to 20-minute live presentation to a panel of distinguished judges.

All masterclasses, The Forum and The Grand Final are from 5:30pm-8:30pm. Venues will be listed on this page closer to the masterclass/event date.

Guidelines, Assessment Criteria & Submission

Guidelines

  1. Contest Registration/Submission will start on Friday, 22nd Feb, and end on Friday, 22nd March. Registration will be accompanied by an online submission of a ten to fifteen-minute video pitch of a team’s sustainability project plus a pack of up to 20 slides.
  2. Shortlisting of ten finalist teams will be sent out via email by Monday, 25th March.
  3. Top twelve teams will be invited to pitch their ten to fifteen-minute sustainability project live to a panel at SIT on Wednesday, 3rd April.
  4. Coaching sessions will be arranged with mentors by Wednesday, 10th April.
  5. The Mapletree Challenge: Grand Final will take place at Mapletree Business City on Thursday, 2nd May 2019. Each of the six finalist teams presents a 10 to 15-minute presentation.

Submission

The first submission by a prospective project team should include a video of the team’s ten to fifteen-minute sustainability project pitch plus a slide pack of up to 20 slides.
