Lien Shih Sheng Bursary

The Lien Shih Sheng Bursary was established to support financially disadvantaged but deserving students who are enrolled in undergraduate degree programmes offered by the Institute.



Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Full-time students pursuing an undergraduate degree programme at the Institute.
  • Singapore Citizens or Singapore Permanent Residents.
  • Household Per Capita Income (PCI) less than or equal to $1,000 or evidence of family financial difficulties.
  • Are effectively bilingual and have good school attendance.
  • Have a record of commitment in voluntary work and serving the community.


Tenure and Benefits of the Bursary:

  • Each Bursary, valued at $5,000, is applicable for one (1) academic year.
  • The Bursary will be used to fund the recipient’s education expenses.
  • Recipients of this Bursary may accept other Bursaries concurrently.
  • No bond is required of the recipient.

About the Donor

The Bursary is made possible by a gift from the Lien Shih Sheng Foundation, in memory of Mr Lien Shih Sheng.

Mr Lien Shih Sheng was a literary pioneer renowned in Singapore and Malaysia from the late 1940s to 1970s. He is remembered for his powerful, concise writing that provided practical guidance on how to develop the skills necessary to succeed in life. A prolific writer, for 20 years he served as Editor at Singapore newspapers Zhong Xin Daily News and at Nanyang Siang Pau where he became Chief Editor. In addition, his work encompassed over 20 volumes of essays, letters, biographies, travelogues, and translations. Common threads in these writings are the importance of ethics, reason, and effort. 

Mr Lien Shih Sheng was keenly involved in arts, education and cultural activities in Singapore and held positions in many organizations. In recognition of his lifelong contributions, he was awarded the Public Service Medal in 1963.
