If you've got ideas, the Ideas-to-Action workshops at The Catalyst will help you bring them to life. The Catalyst is our state-of-the-art makerspace for SIT students and staff to share resources and knowledge, work on projects, network and build. 

The workshops will give you capabilities in 3D printing, electronic, wood, plastic and fabric works. Everything you need to take your ideas further. 

Go through the following workshops to be empowered to build your own protoype.

*Participants are required to complete the Laboratory General Safety Course online prior to the workshops.

Introduction to 2D Design for Creating 3D Objects

Commencement Date: 23 September 2017

Time: 9am to 5pm

Topics Covered:

  • Using 2D vector application (Inkscape) to create designs for laser cutting at the Catalyst
  • Using slicer application to convert 3D model into 2D slices for laser cutting. These slices can then be assembled into 3D form
  • Using photogrammetry to create 3D models from 2D photographic images for visualization and 3D printing

Special Equipment - Laser Engraving and Cutting Course

Commencement Date: 25 September 2017

Time: 1pm to 4.50pm

Topics Covered:

  • Get an introduction to the laser machine and its associated safety aspects.
  • Appreciate examples of innovative laser cut pieces
  • Explore the design process via working with the free open-source professional computer drawing program Corel Draw to create your master piece.
  • Translate your master piece to the laser cutter and learn the technical aspects of laser engraving and cutting.

Types of SUPPORTED WORK

There are 6 different zones with basic tools where students and staff can build their prototypes.

  • 3D Printing

    3D printing is all the rage now. You can request to have your project 3D-printed, up to a basketball size!

  • Electronic Works

    You’ll definitely love our electronic tools to get your soldering done. Tools include oscilloscope, DC power supply and arduino kits.

  • Wood Works

    If you enjoy using wood for its minimalist aesthetic, our saws and bench drills will do the trick to complete your wood product.

  • Laser Cutting

    Looking for a laser that can cut wood, acrylic, and other materials? Create intricate designs and highly detailed cuts using our laser cutter.

  • Plastic Works

    With tools like hot wire cutters and wire bender, your plastic product is only a step away from completion!

  • Fabric Works

    Need to sew? No problem, we’ve got you covered. Our sewing machine and stitching tools are your solutions!​
