Biography
Dr Philip Cheong is currently employed as a Senior Principal Physiotherapist (Clinical) in Singapore General Hospital (SGH). Prior to joining SGH, he worked in both public hospital and private practice settings in Perth, Western Australia. Philip believes that person-centric care is the basic tenet of providing quality health care. Meaningful inter-professional collaboration, up-to-date evidence-based practice, active involvement of the patient, valuing the patient’s input and respecting their values/choices are the keys to providing person-centric care.
Apart from being a clinician, Philip is involved in educating healthcare professionals, conducting research and is currently in a senior leadership position within SGH Department of Physiotherapy where he is Head of Outpatient Physiotherapy Services (OPS) and Chief of Outpatient Physiotherapy Clinical Services, and is responsible for a team of over 50 staff (Physiotherapists and Therapy Assistants).
Under his leadership, OPS has grown from strength to strength. In the role of Chief of Outpatient Physiotherapy Clinical Services, Philip leads and mentors the clinical service leads in improving the quality of clinical services. He has guided the setting up of new clinical registries for various conditions (e.g. knee osteoarthritis, post-operative shoulder, etc) and refining current clinical registries (e.g. post-operative spine, ACL reconstruction).
With the data gleaned from the clinical registries, Philip has worked with his team in successfully submitting manuscripts to peer-reviewed journals.
Philip holds another role as Director, Research (and a member of the Executive Committee) of the SingHealth Duke-NUS Sports and Exercise Medicine Centre.
Philip has also spearheaded the use of Robotic Process Automation in the collection of Patient Reported Outcome Measures in SingHealth, and has been involved in projects that investigate the incorporation of technology in healthcare provision.
His interests are in musculoskeletal sciences, sports physiotherapy, risk stratified care management, chronic pain management and incorporating technology into the provision of healthcare.
