Profile
Biography
Professor Loh Han Tong is a faculty member from the Engineering cluster. As a Colombo Plan Scholar, who graduated with a first-class honours bachelor's degree in engineering from the University of Adelaide, Australia in 1979, he went on to obtain his Masters of Engineering from the National University of Singapore in 1985 and his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, United States of America in 1989 under the NUS Overseas Postgraduate Scholarship.
Prof Loh was the Deputy President (Technical Development) of the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) from 2019 to 2021. Prior to this, Prof Loh was the university’s Deputy President (Academic) and Provost, where he played an instrumental role in steering the strategic development of the university’s degree programmes and the transformation of the overseas degree programmes into joint programmes with overseas university partners.
Prior to joining SIT, Prof Loh spent over 30 years as an academic staff in the Mechanical Engineering Department at the NUS. During his 30-year tenure with NUS, he held several academic leadership positions, including Vice Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Deputy Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Director of Education in the Design Technology Institute Limited and Director of Bachelor of Technology Programme (BTech Programme) in the Faculty of Engineering. He was also a Visiting Scholar at Stanford University and a Fellow of the Singapore MIT Alliance. Prof Loh’s research interest is in the area of product design through computer technologies. He has more than 80 publications in internationally refereed journals and has two patents to his name.
Prof Loh is active in community service. He was the Chairman of the Moulmein Watten Neighbourhood Committee, a member of the Moulmein Constituency Citizen Consultative Committee, Vice Chairman of the Moulmein-Kallang GRC NC Task Force, and a pioneer member of the People’s Association (PA) Neighbourhood Committee Coordinating Council. For his outstanding service to the Moulmein Constituency, Prof Loh was awarded the Commendation Service Award in 2008 and the Merit Service Award by PA in 2013.
For his dedication to the educational sector, Prof Loh was awarded the Pingat Bakti Setia (Long Service Award) by the Prime Minister’s Office in 2013. In recognition of his strong academic leadership at SIT, Prof Loh was awarded the Public Administration Medal (Silver) on National Day 2018.
