24 July 2012

The Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) and Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP) announced the groundbreaking ceremony on 24 July 2012 for the SIT distributed campus located at NP.
SIT will house three of its ten overseas university partners at its building in NP: Newcastle University (NU), University of Glasgow (UOG), and Wheelock College. Construction is expected to be completed by 2014. The following degree programmes will be conducted at the new location:

Situated on a site area spanning approximately 1,800 square metres, the new SIT building will have a total gross floor area of 14,768 square metres. Comprising eight storeys of teaching facilities, it will include two semi-basement storeys that hold three large lecture halls. As a departure from the usual classroom setup, students in Wheelock College’s Early Childhood Education degree programme will be trained in a flexible, simulated pre-school classroom environment during their coursework. NU students will enjoy the use of studios for design purposes while UOG students will have access to Engineering studios for coursework on production.
One of the main features of the new SIT building includes a central atrium with open areas for students to interact. Students will have the use of social spaces such as student clubs, societies rooms, open study areas, project rooms and a student lounge for academic and social activities. In keeping with its open concept, the new building will also feature sky terraces on the third, fifth and seventh storeys overlooking Bukit Timah. It will include naturally ventilated atriums and a naturally lit skylight, and introduce critical façade openings for a wind funnel effect to enhance passive ventilation strategies.
The design for the SIT building in NP was awarded to a consultancy team led by DP Architects Pte Ltd.
