The Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) formally welcomed its 2nd cohort of students at the Welcome Ceremony 2011 held at Raffles City Convention Centre. This academic year, SIT has doubled its intake of students to 1,000, up from the intake of 500 in AY2010/2011 with seven new degree programmes offered to polytechnic graduates. This brings the total to 17 degree programmes offered by SIT.
The Welcome Ceremony is a momentous rite of passage which brings all incoming SIT students together to mark their transition from polytechnic studies to the beginning of their undergraduate life. The students will then participate in a host of freshmen orientation activities planned and organised entirely by the pioneer cohort of SIT students.
In just three months, 60 student representatives from the five overseas universities (OU) came together and conceptualized a Tribal theme for this year’s SIT Student Orientation where freshmen will compete in mass games, sports and tele-matches to foster the spirit of camaraderie amongst the new SITizens.
Speaking at the Welcome Ceremony, Professor Tan Chin Tiong, President of SIT said, “SIT is dedicated to providing more polytechnic graduates an opportunity to pursue a university education. We have some of the best degree programmes in the world that no other institution in Singapore offers to polytechnic graduates and we ensure a compelling mix of industry-focused degree options. This year, we have received over 4000 applications for our programmes and this response indicates the attractiveness of SIT’s programmes to polytechnic upgraders.”
The ceremony was also attended by current students and staff of SIT along with the new students’ invited family members. The audience was treated to a display of dance and special performances choreographed entirely by SIT students themselves.
Students enrolled for AY2011/2012 will begin their programme this September at the respective SIT facilities within each polytechnic as well as at the respective OU campuses.
About Singapore Institute of Technology
SIT was established by the Ministry of Education in 2009 to provide upgrading opportunities primarily for polytechnic graduates. In consultation with various government agencies, SIT has brought to Singapore some of the best degree programmes in the world by partnering reputable overseas universities. These programmes are highly industry-focused and targeted at key growth sectors of the economy.
SIT is committed to a unique tri-partite collaborative model with the overseas university partners and the five local polytechnics to offer polytechnic graduates more opportunities for learning at tertiary level. Additionally, SIT’s unique ‘distributed campus’ model means that programmes are conducted at SIT facilities within each polytechnic, allowing for greater synergy and efficiency with regards to infrastructure and facilities.
SIT students are assessed holistically for both academic excellence and passion. All students are conferred the exact same degree as their counterparts at the home universities and are required to undergo an overseas immersion programme at their respective overseas university’s home campus.
At steady state, SIT aims to take in at least 2000 full-time students per academic year. There are plans to eventually offer part-time degree programmes to cater to full-time working professionals.
