Singapore Institute of Technology and local polytechnics sign partnership agreements
5 campuses at Polytechnics, 50 scholarships and 500 students
The Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) and the five local polytechnics – Singapore Polytechnic (SP), Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP), Temasek Polytechnic (TP), Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) and Republic Polytechnic (RP) - formalised and established the areas of their partnership with the signing of a master agreement today.
The success of SIT is contingent upon a strong and mutually supportive relationship between SIT, the five local polytechnics, overseas universities, Government agencies and industry partners. The polytechnics, in particular, are SIT’s strategic partners as they will host and support industry-focused degree programmes offered by SIT. It is with the strong support of the five polytechnics that SIT is able to make good progress and welcome its first intake of 500 students in 2010, one year ahead of schedule.
Under the terms of the partnership agreement, the polytechnics will partner SIT to provide infrastructure, teaching resources and other necessary facilities. This partnership will bring benefits to both parties and create more opportunities for polytechnic graduates to upgrade their skills.
SIT campuses in the polytechnics
SIT will adopt a “distributed campus” approach by conducting its programmes within each polytechnic. This will allow SIT to leverage on the polytechnics to derive synergies for its students. The polytechnics have agreed to designate a suitable plot of land within each of their campuses for the construction of SIT’s campus. The distributed campuses would be designated as SIT@Polys such as SIT@SP, SIT@NP, SIT@TP, SIT@NYP and SIT@RP. Each campus will have dedicated spaces for teaching, administration and centralised facilities, in order to build a sense of community and identity for the SIT students.
SIT and the polytechnics will work closely together to ensure that the various campuses provide a conducive learning environment for the students, one that enriches the student experience.
The distributed campuses are expected to be completed by 2014.
Faculty development
SIT and the polytechnics will jointly identify polytechnic faculty who have the potential to teach at SIT as Adjunct Lecturers. They would then be given the opportunity for further training and upgrading at the respective overseas universities to prepare for this role. This will be mutually beneficial for both SIT and the polytechnics as SIT will expand their pool of qualified faculty whilst the polytechnics will be able to invest in upgrading the skills and knowledge of their lecturers as part of their professional development.
Support from government agencies and industry partners
SIT’s success is also predicated on forging strong partnerships with government agencies and industry partners to encourage flow-through of graduates in relevant fields which support key growth pillars in our economy. SIT has worked closely with government agencies like the Ministry of Health (MOH), Ministry of Manpower (MOM), Economic Development Board (EDB), Media Development Authority (MDA), National Arts Council (NAC) and Singapore Tourism Board (STB) to determine the offerings from SIT as well as to ensure SIT graduates will pick up industry-relevant skills. EDB, for example, has been very supportive in the digital media and manufacturing industries.
In 2010, SIT has secured 50 scholarships from key industry leaders in the fields of Engineering & Applied Sciences, Digital Media and Hospitality. To date, industry leaders such as Sembcorp Marine, Keppel Offshore and Marine, Association of Singapore Marine Industries (ASMI scholarships from Sembcorp Marine, Keppel Offshore and Marine and ST Marine), Singapore Maritime Foundation (SMF – Maritime ONE scholarships from Lloyd’s Register Education Trust and Singapore Maritime Academy), StarHub, Iggy’s Pte Ltd, Apex-PAL International Ltd (owners of Sakae Sushi) and China Oceanis Pte Ltd have agreed to provide scholarships for SIT students.
About SIT
SIT was established by the Ministry of Education in 2009 to provide industry-focused degree programmes for polytechnic graduates in partnership with the five local polytechnics and renowned overseas universities, to produce highly desired graduates for growth sectors of the economy.
Working closely with the MOE and various government agencies, SIT will ensure that the two-year degree programmes offered will be of the same standard as in the universities’ home countries.
